SURVIVOR ENCAMPMENT RULES AND REGULATIONS

  1. All safety rules must be followed exactly. Tokens will be lost if they are not. If in doubt, ask. No token charge for safety advice. Adults must be present during all fire activities and during raft testing at the lake. Safety Wise book available for free use. Adults can be found at Tribal Center.
  2. No tribe has to complete ANY challenges. You can all vote to sit under a tree and do nothing all day. However, the entire tribe must agree to this. The tribe collecting the most tokens by Sunday morning will win and will receive the prize. Each tribe will decide which challenges to do and in which order. Time management skills will be useful here. You may or may not complete all the challenges.
  3. Every tribe will select a leader and 2 members to tribal council. Any leader may be removed by a majority vote of the tribe. Leaders may be rotated throughout the day if the tribe chooses.
  4. Each completed challenge must be brought to the adults to be approved, or the adults must be brought to the area where the challenge was done, or the adults must witness the challenge being completed to receive credit. Which one depends on the challenge, if in doubt ask.
  5. Instructions are available for many of the challenges, if you already know how to do it, save your tokens and don’t buy them. Buying instructions also entitles you to ask any questions of the adults. They will not complete a challenge for you, but may give you some hints or answer your questions.
  6. You will be returning the items in the Ziploc bags (except those used up) and the radios at the end of the camp in the same condition you received them. There are bonus tokens for this.
  7. There are 3 cabins available for the tribes to use. You may decide among yourselves how to divide. Tribes do not have to stay together for sleeping. Everyone must agree on the final arrangements.
  8. Tribes are free to trade, barter and share information, skills and supplies amongst themselves as they desire for the betterment of all tribes. Be creative and work together and you will accomplish much more. Majority tribal vote rules.
  9. Saturday night you will voting by secret ballot for persons to receive the following awards: Honest and Fair, Friendly and Helpful, Uses Resources Wisely, Sister to Every Girl Scout, Most Team Spirit, Best Planning Skills, Best Survivor Skills, Best Leadership Skills, Most Creative Scout. You may vote for anyone, NOT just your tribe members. Keep this in mind throughout the day if you see someone doing something exceptional or are the recipient of a good deed.
  10. Everyone must keep their belonging with them at all times. If you are not within 10 feet of your stuff, the other tribe may take your things and return them to tribal center to earn tokens that your tribe will lose to regain the belongings.
  11. At all times every member of every tribe must follow all parts of the Girl Scout Law. Any violations could cause your tribe to lose tokens. You will receive a copy with your supplies for your convenience.
  12. Any arguing, fighting, cheating, stealing, threats, or violations of the Girl Scout Law will be grounds to call a Tribal Council. The vote of 3 People is required to call a Tribal Council. They do not need to be on the same tribe. If a tribal council is called, all challenge activities cease and EVERYONE in every tribe reports to the Tribal Center. Members of Tribal council will hear the complaint and decide the punishment. Tie votes will be broken by an adult vote. Adults retain final veto power over any punishment given out. Those who witness any of the above actions will present their case and the accused will have an opportunity to defend themselves. Decision of Tribal council is final, no appeals. Word to the wise: avoid tribal council being called at all costs.
  13. All tribes must remain together at all times. Each tribe can only work on one challenge at a time. They can NOT split up and work on several at once. If someone must use the restroom they must take a buddy. Anyone found by themselves, without adult permission will cost their tribe tokens.
  14. Report to the adults for any first aid issues, or illness of any tribe member.
  15. The arts challenge and the fashion challenge will be done inside tribal center. Fire Challenge will be done in the designated area, as will the group cooperation challenge. All other challenges will be done where the tribe chooses. Please consider your daylight hours, and threat of rain when planning out which challenges you will do when. They may be completed in any order. Those that require all tribes to work together will require all tribes to agree on timing.
  16. Special credit and possibly extra tokens await those that use creativity and imagination, great teamwork and good leadership and planning skills. Try to think outside the box for ways to do things. If the rules don’t say you can’t do it that way, AND it is within safety rules, go for it!
  17. Tribes may use the radios to communicate amongst themselves or to the adults. Just remember the adults will be listening at all times!
  18. Use the resources you have wisely. That includes the skills and abilities of all your teammates. The youngest girl on your tribe may have the most expertise and experience in the area you are working in. Do not overlook her, she may be your ticket to more tokens and being the winning tribe. Money (or token) management is critical. The final count may be very close, choose wisely what to spend your tokens on and be careful not to lose them for not following the rules. One person in the tribe may want to be responsible for handling the tokens.
  19. At times during the day special treats may be available (for tokens) at tribal center. You will be informed when this occurs. You may vote as a tribe whether or not to participate.

SCAVENGER HUNT – Each tribe will locate, outside, in the immediate area and woods 9 ziploc bags numbered 1-9. Tribes may trade with each other to end up with 9 different bags. Bonus bags are hidden out there also, they are not numbered.

RAFT CHALLENGE – Each tribe will create one raft of string and twigs (only, no balloons) found in nature. Raft must hold up the toy troll for 1 minute in the lake. Troll and raft will be held by string from shore so we don’t lose them, but the troll can not be tied to the raft.

FIRE CHALLENGE – #1 Each tribe will properly light a fire in the fire area, using the tools provided, items from nature and following ALL safety rules. An adult must be present. Light a fire in the designated fire pit, that will burn a string 12” above the fire. #2 start a fire using materials provided or found, but not any matches (flint &steel avail.)

1st AID CHALLENGE – Each tribe, using only their bandanas and things they find will produce a correctly done ankle bandage, head bandage, arm sling with splint and leg splint.

TRIBAL ARTS CHALLENGE – #1 Each tribe will produce a tribal totem pole using Girl Scout Cookie boxes (or suitable substitute), a pole (provided) and art supplies (provided). Each member of the tribe should be represented and their part of the pole should tell something important about them. #2 Each tribe will produce a tribal swap that represents their tribe in some way. They will make enough for every girl in the other tribes (and themselves if desired). Use art materials provided or things found in nature. #3 Each tribe will produce a tribal skit or song that represents what their tribe is about and gives a positive message. Swaps and skit/song will be presented to the other tribes in the evening.

SHELTER CHALLENGE – #1 Each tribe using the trash bags and rope they have and items found in nature will produce a shelter that will keep a piece of paper dry when a bucket of water is thrown at it by the adults. #2 – Each tribe will correctly put up the tent provided.

GROSS FOOD CHALLENGE – Each tribe will participate in snack at mid-afternoon. Each member of the tribe must eat at least one bite.

GROUP COOPERATION CHALLENGE – ALL tribes must work together on this to create a human caterpillar. Using only balloons they have and no hands, they will place an inflated balloon between each two people, form one long chain and walk around the circular drive in Rambler. Everyone must remain connected and no balloons can drop.

MEAL CHALLENGE – Using only the ingredients provided, all tribes will work together to produce a meal for everyone including the adults (who will be served). The group will determine jobs, divide the work (including cleanup) and make a plan for breakfast using the items everyone brought and assign people to get up early and have it ready at 8am.

CEREMONIAL CHALLENGE – #1 Each tribe will correctly carry out a flag ceremony at the pole, using a color guard and correctly folding the flag. #2- Each tribe will present a Scouts Own ceremony for Sunday morning (Girl Scout Sunday).  Make it good, the Brownies may come watch.

DISTRESS/SURVIVAL CHALLENGE – #1 Each tribe pretending they are lost in the woods and using only the materials on them or found in nature will make a distress signal that could be viewed by a search plane flying overhead. Be able to tell 2 things you would or wouldn’t do when lost. #2 Complete the survival game, tokens awarded based on your tribal score

KNOW YOUR TRIBE  CHALLENGE – Each member of the tribe will tell the adults the full name of everyone in the tribe and 2 things about them from memory.

COMPASS CHALLENGE – #1 Each tribe will prepare a map/instruction sheet for another tribe to use to find a specific item/landmark. Begin at a chosen starting point and using a minimum of 10 instructions with the compass (20° - take 10 steps, etc.) will lead them to a specific item/landmark. #2 a tribe must follow another tribe’s map and find the item using the compass. (each tribe making a map that is usable by the other tribe to actually find the landmark. gets an additional 2 tokens.

SPORTS CHALLENGE – Each tribe will invent a sport using items available at the tribal center or found in nature. They will decide how to score and make a set of rules. They will challenge another tribe to play the sport with them. Must play at least one game with another tribe. (Assort. balls available)

FASHION CHALLENGE – Each tribe will produce a tribal outfit including a hat using only newspapers, masking tape and markers.  This will be worn over regular clothes and should be removable so that is can be modeled at the evening ceremony .

P B & J CHALLENGE – Each tribe will determine ALL the steps in preparing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Ingredients provided. Use the 20 index cards and write one step on each card (you may or may not use all the cards) put the cards in order. While an adult watches one member of the tribe will follow each step exactly to make the sandwich. They can only do what is on the cards, so be sure not to miss any steps.

                    go over rules, tribes select names, a leader and
                    2 members to tribal council

10:30 – Scavenger Hunt

11:00 – 3:00 Challenges, break for lunch as needed

3:00 – Gross Food Challenge at Tribal Center (lodge)

5:00 – All tribes report to Tribal Center for Meal Challenge

7:00-8:00 Select Cabins, cabin mates and free time

8:00 -  Evening Ceremony with fire, skits, songs, modeling
            tribal costumes. Tribal council, voting for awards and presentation

Sunday

8:00 – Report to Tribal Center for Breakfast. 4 Tokens to
           any tribe that every member is there on time. Those
           responsible for preparing breakfast should be there
           earlier. All must be ready to eat at 8am.

8:30 -  Clean up and Pack up. 1 Token to each person in
           each cabin that has all there stuff packed up and out
           and the cabin is completely clean by 9:00 sharp

9:00 -  Report to Flag Pole for Flag Ceremony and Scouts’
           Own presentations. Tokens awarded.

9:30 -  Tribe leader should turn in all tribe tokens for final
            count, winner announced and prize presented.

10:00 – Good bye!   

SERVICE PROJECT: Each girl brings one new or gently used stuffed animal to be donated to the sheriff's patrol for giving to children that are the "Survivors" of disaster or abuse.
